Tata Steel on Wednesday said its wholly-owned subsidiary Tata Steel Nederland plans to restructure its IJmuiden operations to improve efficiency and competitiveness. The move is expected to result in the loss of around 1,600 management and support roles, the company said in an exchange filing.
Tata Steel Nederland has filed a request for advice with the Central Works Council to begin consultations on parts of the reorganisation. Trade unions have also been informed.
The reorganisation is part of the company’s green steel transition plan, which includes replacing one of its two blast furnaces with a direct reduced iron furnace and an electric arc furnace by end-2030. The switch aims to cut carbon emissions by nearly 5 million tonnes annually.
In 2024-25, the Netherlands unit recovered to a liquid steel production capacity of around 6.75 million tonnes per year. However, weak demand in Europe, fuelled by geopolitical tensions, trade disruptions and high energy costs, has weighed on costs and financial performance.
