India's wholesale price inflation accelerated to 9.87% in June from 9.68% in May, driven by faster increases in food and primary article prices, while inflation in manufactured products remained unchanged, according to data released by the Commerce and Industry Ministry today.

Food inflation under the Wholesale Price Index rose to 6.14% in June from 4.49% in the previous month, while inflation in primary articles accelerated to 7.00% from 4.99%. Inflation in fuel and power eased to 27.41% from 30.33% in May.

Inflation in manufactured products, which account for over 63% of the WPI basket, was unchanged at 7.48% in June. CoreWPI inflation, which excludes food and fuel, eased marginally to 7.5% from 7.7% in May.

The ministry said mineral oils, food articles, basic metals, and chemicals and chemical products were the major contributors to wholesale inflation during the month.

Separately, the Output Producer Price Index, which measures prices received by domestic producers, rose 9.57% on year in June compared with 9.38% in May. The all-commodities Output PPI index increased to 109.9 from 109.6 a month earlier.

The all-India trial Input PPI for manufacturing sector for June was at 107.1, up from 104.9 in May and 100.9 in March, which is the first data available.
The ministry also revised April WPI inflation to 8.36% from the provisional estimate of 8.26% following a revision in the index.

India's retail inflation had accelerated to 4.38% in June, the highest since December 2024, as food prices continued to rise, pushing headline inflation above the Reserve Bank of India's medium-term target of 4%. This is much lower than wholesale inflation as oil retailers are yet to fully pass on the rise in crude oil prices to petrol and diesel. Also, the government had cut taxes on fuels, helping keep their prices low.
