India’s industrial production rose 8.0% on year in August, up from a revised 7.4% growth in July, due to growth in manufacturing. The uptick in electricity and gas supply offset a contraction in mining, government data showed.
Manufacturing output rose 9.0% year-on-year in August, while electricity and gas supply increased 12.3%. Mining and quarrying output contracted 5.6%, while water supply, sewerage and waste management rose 6.3%.
The overall Index of Industrial Production (IIP) stood at 123.3 in August, compared with 114.2 a year earlier. Manufacturing grew 8% or more for the third consecutive month, the government said.
Industrial output grew 6.7% in the April-August period, compared with 4.2% in the year-ago period. Manufacturing rose 7.4% during the five months, while electricity and gas supply increased 9.5%. Mining contracted 2.0%. Water supply, sewerage and waste management rose 6.4%.
Within manufacturing, 18 of 23 industry groups recorded year-on-year growth in August.
Electrical equipment output rose 30.9%, other transport equipment increased 25.3%, and motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers gained 25.2%. Rubber and plastics products rose 21.4%, while computer, electronic and optical products increased 19.3%.
Among use-based categories, capital goods output rose 16.9% year-on-year, intermediate goods 13.7% and infrastructure and construction goods 12.0%. Consumer durables output increased 11.1%.
Primary goods output rose 3.5%, while consumer non-durables increased 2.1% from a year earlier.
The government revised July industrial production growth to 7.4% from the earlier quick estimate of 6.7%.
