Alan Greenspan, who led the US Federal Reserve for more than 18 years, died on Monday at age 100, his wife, journalist Andrea Mitchell, said.

Greenspan died at their home from complications of Parkinson’s disease, Mitchell said in a statement, according to various media reports.

Appointed by President Ronald Reagan in 1987, Greenspan served five terms under four presidents until 2006. He steered monetary policy through the 1987 stock-market crash, the 1990s economic expansion, the dot-com bust and the aftermath of the September 11 attacks.

His record came under scrutiny after the 2007-2009 financial crisis.

Critics said the Fed’s low interest rates and Greenspan’s support for financial deregulation helped fuel the US housing bubble.
Greenspan acknowledged in 2008 that he had found a flaw in his belief that financial institutions could adequately police themselves.
